On Zayne Being "Mature" (AKA why Brat Zayne is my favorite Zayne)

I have heard some players say that they don't gravitate to Zayne because he's too serious. There have been allegations that he comes off as cold and that he is the "boring" choice. More generously, I have heard Zayne described as a brat tamer. However, I submit to you that Zayne is actually also the brat. And that it's a good thing.

[Usual disclaimer that this is JUST MY OPINION. Other interpretations of Zayne are equally valid, but this is the internet and I get to yell things just like everyone else. Also, yes, this is armchair psychology. I'm not a real psychologist, Zayne is not real, and this is just for fun. I'm not going back to grad school and you can't make me. Mild-to-moderate spoilers for various Zayne memories ahead.]

Part 1) Zayne is a brat (or at least more childish than he wants us to think) and I have receipts

As a Zayne main, I want to put down this idea that he is too serious. He can be serious, I won't deny that, but more attention could be paid to the fact he is often doing the most to be unserious and at best has only deluded himself into thinking otherwise.

Exhibit A, Your Honor: In Nostalgic Sweetness, Zayne physically shoves MC's hand away when she tries to show him a dentist report that says he shouldn't eat sugar for a while. Not even indefinitely. Just A WHILE. And then, when she's teasing him with macarons later (which, to be fair, was uncalled for) and tells him that he's acting like a three year old, his big comeback is "at least I'm more mature than you." A man in his late 20s basically just said "NO U." Let that sink in. This is our big serious man.

Exhibit B: In Heartfelt Encounter, when MC is feeling down, he plays hopscotch with her. In fact, he initiates it. IN PUBLIC. This man for whom (at first) it seems like even hand-holding out in the open would be too lewd a display. And this is after admitting he never played hopscotch as a kid, he only saw others play it. (Which: OW. MY HEART. 🥺)

Exhibit C: His text messages where MC teases him about having always been mature even as a kid, like that isn't a cause for concern, or at least worth examining a bit further.

Honestly, there are probably so many examples that I forgot/don't know about yet/would make this post excruciatingly long. This man's having dreams about space exploration with penguins (which sounds like the plot of a gosh dang children's picture book) and trying to drink hot cocoa instead of medicine when he's sick even though he is literally a doctor. And then he'll turn around and act like MC wanting to watch the snow outside at night is something "only a child would do."

And, I cannot stress this enough, I LOVE HIM FOR THIS.

Part 2) Zayne is a brat because he was at least partly parentified/wasn't able to just be a kid

There are so many instances where Zayne tries to parent MC: telling her it's too cold to sleep on the sofa, making sure she's drinking enough water, chiding her about how her dangerous behavior is going to send her to the hospital, etc. He's good at it too. (Side note: this is because while Sylus is Daddy, Zayne is Father, and no, I will not elaborate.) Now personally, in real life, I would not allow someone to treat me like a child or say "you're acting like a child" to my face, even if it that is the case. But when Zayne says it, instead of condescension, it gives off a feeling of care and appreciation that I adore. (Most of the time.)

The reason Zayne is capable of pulling this off and why he emotionally complements MC so well is that he's just as "childish" as she is, only he was never permitted, either by choice or by circumstance, to show it. I don't know much about his parents, but Zayne gives me the vibe of someone who had to grow up too fast. I wouldn't be surprised if his parents were also doctors. His whole demeanor smacks of growing up in a household with loving but busy parents, forced to learn to be an adult through observation (watching his parents care for others) and through taking care of himself. Early in his adult relationship with MC, Zayne's way of expressing affection seems restricted to this parent-like mode, showing concern for someone's well-being and/or acting to help them, even though there's a part of him that's obviously longing for other ways to feel connected. In Engraved Affection, Zayne says MC should leave him while he's sick but then it clearly upsets him when she pretends to do it. He doesn't know how to ask for care because he's always been the one giving it. Later in their relationship, we see him start to connect in other ways, like spending time together in Doomsday or being more physically affectionate in Everlasting Wish.

And then there's his evol. There's a lot that's been said about Zayne's obsession with self-control because of his evol that I won't dig into here, but I recommend Cyberspace Maz's video on the relationship between control and intimacy in Zayne's psychology if you're interested.

I don't know if the time Zayne hurt MC was the first time he lost control of his evol or not, but regardless of when it happened, it must have been horrifying. (I'm inclined to believe the first time did happen with her, otherwise he might not have allowed himself to get attached in the first place.) It's possible that the lesson he learned then was not to get too close to anyone for fear for accidentally losing control (something that happens to kids all the time) and hurting them, and this further isolated him and restricted him from those childhood experiences that are necessary parts of growing up. Search Google Scholar for "benefits of play" and you will be bombarded by evidence of how important it is for healthy child development, especially socially and emotionally.

Because of all this, there's a part of Zayne that is just a tall child, holding a scalpel, having a conversation only he understands.

Part 3) It WORKS that Zayne is a brat because it's the perfect balance to that more serious side of him, gives him depth, and makes him a great complement to MC

I made a post about how Sylus's Beyond Cloudfall myth is really key to his character, and I feel much the same way about Zayne's "brattiness." Much like Sylus, this more tender side of Zayne has always been there, and MC is not the cause of it, she just gives him the space to be open with it. His bond story when he first appears in MC's life again outside the hospital, A Frozen Promise, illustrates this perfectly. The writers set you up to see what a softie Zayne is with the snow cat that he made for himself to enjoy. He is alone at that table until MC shows up, and then he immediately tries to hide the cute toy cat because that isn't who he thinks he's allowed to be. I knew he was going to be my main right then because THAT MOMENT when he disappears the cat after smiling at it MADE ME WANT TO CUDDLE HIM FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE (AND MINE). At a restaurant? Cuddle him. Wanderers appear? Cuddle him. He's performing surgery? Cuddle him. (This is why I would be a terrible MC, I suffer from a chronic case of zero chill.)

I'm still new, so I hope there's a card out there that addresses this aspect of Zayne's character more closely because it's one of my favorite things about him. Despite the number of Caleb posts I've done (and intend to do), Zayne is still my main and a dream partner. I absolutely love his dynamic with MC. Not only the fact that he encourages her more childlike behaviors (either by pretending to criticize her, which we all know will only make our girl double down, or just openly showing how much he likes it), but the way he takes care of her because he loves doing it, not because he thinks she always needs it. You see this immediately when there's real danger happening, like in Fragrant Possession or parts of Death and Rebirth. Zayne goes from pseudo-parent to partner so fast, trusting MC without reservation to do the job he knows she's good at, backing her up with medical support and only stepping in when necessary. And even then, he fights alongside her, something he would not do if he truly thought she was immature. He does not want to tame his brat. He likes her that way, in part because she reminds him of himself.

TL;DR: Look beyond the the brat tamer in Zayne and you will see the brat, and they both deserve ALL THE LOVE. Zayne was never boring or cold, only traumatized, possibly parentified, and naturally reserved. And his diabolical sweet tooth and outright fussiness are cute as fuck, I don't even care.

Warnings: none, this is mostly fluff

Escorts you everywhere, Knight and Royalty style. He doesn't see it that way, of course, but that's the vibe. God forbid your feet ever touch the ground when leaving a vehicle or ship he'll start maiming. Firmly believes your place is protected at his side or in his arms.

Lion speaks to you very little despite rarely leaving your side. Something something, you can take the cat out of the house but not the house of the cat. Being with you hasn't fundamentally changed his nature. It surely bothers you, you must start and carry every conversation, but over time you realised his silent ways of showing interest. Lion doesn't just expect you to speak first, he looks forward to it. Those that know him can tell the mere fact he's looking at you is the sign he's interested.

Once you gave him the silent treatment, not maliciously, you just couldn't be bothered for once. By not even midday he dragged you off to a side room, sat you down somewhere you were eye level and began to reprimand you. "Why is it that you're playing coy, hm?" He had little reference for negative personal emotion and usually manifests through confusion, occasionally anger. He scoffed and called your tiredness a silly reason for ignoring him but spent the day more attentive than ever.

Should be noted that telling him you're upset, tired, etc is a recipe for getting swept away back to your room immediately. No ifs, ands or buts. If he can't immediately remove the cause of your discomfort he'll simply take you away.

Often worries in general but particularly if he's doing your relationship wrong. It's not hard to interpert his tendency to shut down or standoffish behaviour as anxiety. He's paranoid about every other part of his life, why not you as well.

Regardless of gender, wants you dressed beautifully. "For the pride of the First Legion." So he says, but his unusual interest in getting you clothes that match his eyes tell a different story.

Unlikely to give gifts face to face. He'll have something constructed, crafted etc and order one of his idiot sons bring it to you or leave it in a place you frequent. Would never confess it but he fears your reaction to his gifts. Well, fears that he doesn't know you as well as he thinks he does.

He is part of the club of primarchs who want to kick their legions to death. So aside from mandated gaurds when he isn't present, your interactions with the Dark Angels is limited. Probably for the best. Often rants to you about why he wants his sons grilled alive.

Loves you being well read, particularly about Caliban. Before he leaves for a hunt he'll ask which beast you want him to bring back for you. He takes great, great pride is displaying it's pelt or horns in your shared areas.

Trapped in a prison of his own making. Enjoys surprises kisses but he's too tall to get them, won't ask for them and very rarely will he kneel to your level. If he does kneel and doesn't get any he'll be kicking rocks all day sorry.

the problem with 'who would win in a fight' hypotheticals is that they never establish what Universe everyone would be fighting in. which changes everything. I will now use Superwholock to discuss:

SUPERNATURAL

Magic exists in this universe, so Sherlock would absolutely be able to make magical bombs and tracking spells with like three blades of grass and a shoe. HOWEVER, since he would be hit by the general film-noir ness / Kripke edge-lord energy, he WOULD also be actively relapsing, and sleeping on John's couch because he just got kicked out of the British Men of Letters. BUT, depending on where we are in the show's run, Sam and Dean might actually be doing worse, so that's a wash.

It wouldn't matter though. because in the Supernatural Universe the Doctor is 100% a mad angel-variant who in an authentic attempt to protect Earth, accidentally destroys and replaces God.

WINNER - DOCTOR

SHERLOCK

No sci-fi or fantasy elements, so the Doctor is now Mycroft's really high powered friend, and the fact that he seems to know everyone and work for every organization is a running joke. (Sherlock is convinced he's a con artist.) Considering both a higher budget to show longer and more complicated fights AND the trick shots people in the Sherlock Universe manage to pull off - I think Sam and Dean both get much luckier and more competent. (I get coerced-into-working-for-Moriarty vibes from them.)

They won't be able to beat the Doctor, who will have Deus Ex Machina powers, and Sherlock will definitely be able to trick them. BUT the Winchesters will probably go down taking Lestrade or some beloved secondary character with them.

WINNER - probably still the Doctor, but it's close.

DOCTOR WHO

The only universe where I don't see a straightforward fight happening, because that's not really how the Doctor likes to solve problems. When he does, he'll be poking fun at the concept by fighting with a spoon or while wearing pajamas or something. But Superwholock can still be in conflict, that's fine.

Sherlock and the Winchester brothers are both on the track of the Doctor (Sherlock is still a detective, the Winchesters are conspiracy theorists.) I think Sherlock would be cast in a 'skeptic' role, to contrast with Dean Winchester's 'believer' .... and I honestly don't like Sherlock's chances. The Doctor Who universe is too earnest for the narrative to treat skeptics well long-term. Dean honestly has 'Companion' written all over him, although it probably wouldn't be very long before he got himself killed in some heroic sacrifice, and he'd STAY dead in this universe. At which point Sam either becomes the Master, or is revealed to have been the Master the whole time. And Villain!Sam is pretty formidable even in his own cringefail universe, so... I can't say I love the Doctor's chances.

WINNER: TPK. No one walks out of there alive.

⤹ this was a general collective reading i did, just for what you may need to hear in terms of your shifting journey! take what feels right, leave what doesn't, and ultimately, don't take it too seriously! i'm a beginner, this was a big learning experience for me :) i also included a "music recs" section at the end of each reading- these were just songs that came to mind very strongly during the course of the reading. they might matter, they might not, but it felt right to include them. anyways, let's see what the cards had in store for you all!

୨ . ࣪ ONE. BLOSSOM

okay, this reading felt suuuper powerful to me as i was walking through it! it was made up entirely of cups or major arcana, and each card tied back to water. you guys have soooo much potential! specifically for transformation of some sort.

you guys are true yearners. you want to experience everything that's out there! but there seems to be some type of blockage to you getting this, and it's coming from within. something along the lines of "it's too late now, i'll just attempt tomorrow", "i can't shift because of xyz", "i don't deserve to shift because of xyz". maybe excuses, maybe rooted in some genuine belief? not that you can't shift if you have doubts, because you can, and doubt is totally natural. but in your case, i think you need to do some real reflecting on why it is you're still chasing this goal of shifting. why is it so important to you, what exactly it is that you're still chasing after, even with these doubts. further, why are you holding yourself back from having all of this good when you're so deserving of it? what emotions or energies are holding you back?

it could be something in this reality that's got you down (which also could be causing you to take an "extended break", you know the kind, where you tell yourself you'll try again tonight, then don't even think about it until the next night. and the cycle repeats... no shade! we've all been there). very much the vibe of "i can't shift, so i'm just gonna focus on this reality". you need to unpack, and find out what's at the root of why you think you can't shift. motivation has its ups and downs, take advantage of this downtime to really evaluate. you aren't "too dumb" or "not the right kind of person" for shifting- you know about shifting for a reason, and it isn't this magical or impossible feat. you were meant for this. take your time off, learn more, come back when you have more clarity; keep growing. just keep swimming!

maybe you've been a shifter for a really long time, and you try and try and try but don't seem to see any results. as a result, you may be losing faith in shifting, in yourself, in the universe, whatever. which is why i think taking a break, or taking the break you're currently on and repurposing it, is so crucial. reevaluate your relationship with shifting, really look at why you're still trying after all this time, all these failed attempts. speaking of which, try not to look at them as failures. each attempt is a learning experience, an opportunity to find what works for you and your journey. we've all been here, and it's definitely disheartening, but don't let it make you jaded. you're not one of those people who make posts like "so, does anyone wanna tell me if shifting is real, or was it all just a big inside joke in 2020". you're on shiftblr, you know it's not a joke and you know you're here for a reason!!! take the time to get your confidence back up and make peace with any doubts/bitterness you feel.

ultimately, this pile was about potential and new beginnings. you've been down, you've had your doubts. you probably scroll shiftblr thinking about your drs, reading storytimes, looking at shifting exercises- but you don't translate it into attempts. now is the time for a reset. this is when you bounce back, when you truly acknowledge that your limiting beliefs are, in fact, limiting; that your doubts are just doubts, and not facts or reality or rules; that you can do it. you have soooo much potential (for shifting and beyond) and you're cultivating this love/appreciation in your heart for yourself as a shifter, as a person, as a limitless being, and it's gonna get you so far. you're gonna see results and you're gonna notice so much good.

extra notes: you have. the universe wants you to have more. the universe has so much more for you to have. but you need to step into it for yourself. the universe isn't on a budget! but you have to truly realize this for yourself in order to take advantage of the fact.

this pile very much read as a counterpart to pile one. you guys have been on top of things lately- either having conquered some doubt or blockage you were experiencing, or otherwise "reclaimed your power" in terms of shifting. your mental/spiritual state has become very aligned and balanced. you guys might be especially into loa, or maybe just really grasp the concept that the 3D ≠ the definitive truth. you could also be totally new to online shifting spaces, and not have a background of 2020 shifttok misinfo, which has allowed you to grasp a lot of concepts very easily. left brain and right brain are balanced here, you've got everything lined up.

your issue seems to lie more in your dr itself/scripting it. there's a choice or choices that you are struggling with. could be related to your s/o (who you want to get with, if you should change a certain aspect of their canon/real life counterpart, if there should be tension/drama of some sort, etc). could also be related to trauma- either you've experienced something in this reality, and don't know if/how you should represent it in your dr, OR you're having second thoughts/guilt about trauma that you've scripted in your dr "for the plot". could also just be something like "i can't figure out where this event fits into the timeline". regardless, you want to settle any issues and patch all "plotholes", but the things that are bothering you just keep popping up, or seemingly cannot be resolved. it's frustrating, because everything else is lined up, except for this one thing. major case of "i just need to perfect my script, then i can shift". ultimately, you will resolve this. you'll find that flow and balance that the rest of your shifting life has, and you'll be right back on track. it won't be quick, but it'll definitely be fruitful.

another source of dissonance here could be this disconnect you feel from your dr, because you feel like you don't know enough- specifically about the people in your life. realistically, you know that the people in your dr are real, rather than "real in your head". you understand that they're all real people, but from here, you can't grasp the full essence of them. it sucks, but persist! meditate. heavy on that. you could also do shifting exercises and games that make you think of memories/scenarios from your dr, and the little intricacies of your people. you won't know everything, but no one ever really does. that doesn't invalidate anything. you know a lot, and you grasp concepts, but you can always learn more through direct experience.

overall, things may be misaligned right now, but it'll all fall into place! have patience. trust your intuition- if it feels like a "sign" of some sort (especially ones related to the people you know), take it as such. don't be like "oh, that's ridiculous", let it motivate you to get to your people. let yourself be guided through your confusion; you will come out the other end more knowledgeable and more in control. be open. also keep in mind that you don't need to have concrete/fully fleshed out reasoning behind everything! your dr won't have "plotholes" or "missing pieces" because you didn't perfectly figure everything out in your script! you don't need a perfect script or a foolproof method or all of the answers. just go where you think you should, do what calls to you, what feels right. refresh, and remind yourself what you're actually doing.

extra notes: this whole thing reminded me of that meme that's like "DO IT FOR HER" with all the photos surrounding it (does anyone know what i'm talking about help 😭). but yeah! that's you guys with shifting for your s/o. cute. i was also thinking about twilight sparkle while interpreting this pile lol; it's this thirst for knowledge that can be very beneficial, but also hinder you in other ways

you guys are creatives. maybe you're a shiftblr microceleb lol. shifting is your creative outlet- you always have such cool and unique scenarios and storytimes, or even the most aesthetic layouts for your posts. passion + creativity = your happy place. it's also likely that a lot of you have yet to shift, you've shifted briefly, or you've shifted once before and haven't been able to replicate it. you like approaching everything with your own flair, but lately, this doesn't seem to be working.

feels like you're dealing with some type of imposter syndrome, which is causing this kind of tension. you've got all this passion and creative energy that you put towards shifting, but you aren't shifting, so trying to tap into/use this energy just feels draining. i think what you guys need is a real break. burnout is real, and unfortunately you are not immune. maybe this has been a long time coming, but you deserve the break. your motivation is like a clear stream. usually, putting in effort, scripting, making pinterest boards, making posts- they all feel like pouring into this stream and making it better, helping it grow, whatever (analogy doesn't really work i'm aware but it's what popped into my head while i was doing the reading shhhh just roll with it). when doing all of these things starts to feel like pouring poison or something into this stream- when you open pinterest to build your wardrobe and immediately close the app because you suddenly just don't want to- that's how you know it's time to take a step back.

you guys just feel so all over the place? i was getting a lot of mixed signals throughout this pile, i just think a lot of you are feeling frazzled. let's get grounded here. help you look at things with fresher eyes. you don't need to post every day, and every post doesn't need to be more aesthetically pleasing than the last. you don't need to prove anything to anyone. the amount of "successful" attempts you have doesn't matter. in a similar vein, stop downplaying your "minishifts". you shifted. that's it. just because you may not have as many posts to share or stories to tell as other people doesn't make you any less valid/legit. this section is a bit of a mess but there's much nuance and individual experience that goes into the shifting journey, and that energy was kinda all in my head. just stop comparing yourself to every super cool shiftblr account, every success story you see, every storytime you read. it's so fine to take inspiration, but comparing yourself doesn't help.

becauseeeee comparing like that can very easily lead to frustration. and i think a lot of you are in the same boat with this one. keep in mind that this isn't black and white- it's not like your only options are "shift now" or "give up forever". taking a break is not giving up, it's part of the shifting journey and it's totally necessary. maybe this is a little corny, but you've gotta take every experience as an opportunity rather than a failure. you don't lose, you just try again. shifting isn't going anywhere. just be kind to yourselves lol.

extra notes: don't let your creativity or your motivation stagnate. obviously, take breaks as needed, but what i mean is don't be scared to overhaul your page or retcon major details of your script. don't be afraid of change or of new beginnings. maybe having a following makes you feel stifled and is holding you back. do what you have to do in order to express yourself and progress. look at things from a new perspective and go places you've never been. look at shifting with the starry eyes you had when you first learned about it.

hey you don't know me but i do have thoughts.

in terms of general world building obviously the school the music video is set in has uniforms, which can be a catholic or private school thing but based on the general vibes and scenery of the video it seems just like a relatively large public school that just happens to have uniforms. schools like that also tend to have weirdly specific rules and be structured in weird ways (ex referring to the head of school as the dean of students instead of the principal or having both a head of school and a dean, or having regulations on what students can or can't do with piercings/hair/etc). personally i think in terms of uniforms the little foursome of protagonists would wear theirs in varying states of disarray- as seen in the video they get food thrown at them so there's probably stains on the white parts that they can't be bothered to get out. illi probably also has grass stains on hers, particularly the bottom of her pants or skirt from playing croquet. mikey would keep his shirt untucked so he could use the end to wipe smudges off his glasses, which would also result in lead and other fingerprints along the hem of his shirt. there's a girl in the video wearing these tall chunky heeled boots, which wouldn't be required because heels are rarely a part of a school dress code, so they probably have freedom when it comes to shoes. i think most distinctively frank would wear torn up docs or black boot equivalents (mikey is also wearing a pair in the video). you also see a jock in the video wearing a varsity jacket and people just not wearing their blazers/suit jackets. ray doesn't wear his in most portions of the video, and it's also clear they don't fit illi that well (probably because they're wearing a girl's blazer, which has extra room in the chest area- look up single breasted blazers in comparison to regular men's blazers). this part isn't in the video but i feel like frank would alter his- like rip it and even add patches to it, which probably wouldn't be allowed (most schools with uniforms have like a no additional emblems especially those that portray an alignment with a certain belief etc sort of rule), which he would likely consistently get in trouble for and have to get new ones.

as a group i think they would spend a lot of time at skate parks (not skating, just sitting on the sides and eating snacks), at illi and mikey's house in the basement, at comic book stores, and in movies (they definitely buy tickets for one movie then stay and watch like three more movies when they have a big chunk of open time, which is usually).

okay breaking it down by character below

FRANK: he also has two rubber bands/hair ties on his wrist in the video (one pink and one black). the only person whose hair is long enough to need those (other than ray, but curly hair and ponytails is a whole process) is illi's. side eye but moving on. frank wears earrings, a lip ring (probably also not allowed by school dress code), chipped black nail polish, and a regular ring in the video. i think that not just illi but all four of them are probably viewed as effeminate boys, which is likely part of why they get picked on. he's also got tattoos on his wrist, which to me says he probably has a fake ID (you can't get a tattoo under 18 in new jersey, even with parental consent, by law), although he probably wouldn't use it to get into bars or anything, just for tattoos, cigarettes, and like maybe porn idk. he clearly styles the back of his hair at least. i have a lot of thoughts on frank. if you can't tell.

MIKEY: obviously he has asthma and carries around the inhaler. he has plastic glasses, not wire rimmed ones, which i personally think is the result of getting his wire ones broken (either by other people or himself) too many times. glasses are really expensive, trust me. i also think he would listen to the type of music that people today who wear affliction performatively listen to if ykwim and be like a tiny bit stuck up about it. def talks to frank about how everyone at their school is boring. most likely to sneak out of school, security has stopped trying to get in his way by now because he always finds a way out.

ILLI: i like to use they/she pronouns for illi, but obviously you can do whatever. i agree with all the takes that are like stop infantilizing and softening illi just because you view them as more feminine like she is GROSS and GREASY and WEIRD and NERDY and VIOLENT. she hangs out with her brother and two cis boys, is into nerd shit but gets bad grades, and has a lot of big emotions that she doesn't necessarily handle maturely. does also have some friends who she's less close with who are girls (there's a shot in the science lab scene of them chatting with a girl at another lab table). is allowed to use the girls locker room because when they were forced to use the boys one they started a fistfight at least three times a week consistently. has also thrown croquet balls at people who say rude things while passing by the field. runs full force at problems literally and metaphorically.

RAY: more on the hyperactive side, is failing his classes (as they all are) because he can't fucking sit still. its def not that he's not smart, he would probably help the others study he's in the music video the only one using the library appropriately, but he doesn't function well in a traditional classroom setting. none of them do probably except maybe mikey, only on the taking notes and lecture style bits. i think he would be the one most interested in making music in-universe, he probably would talk about it with the rest of them tho- mikey carries around tapes and listens to music all day so he doesn't have to listen to any of the surrounding noise at school, frank would be into the punk scene but more the politics and screaming than the specifics of the music although obviously they all listen to a lot of music.

also their school mascot is the beavers.

sorry hi last reblog has me thinking about how i havent played in awhile. i haven't been a fan of the recent updates they're far too 'content production'-y for me. but i just want to express i think many of the best moments in gw2 story have been when the writing is utter camp slop that the writers were clearly extremely emotionally invested in, completely regardless of their production timeframes or budget. my opinion basically is guild wars 2 is better when it's worse

Amanda... I miss her.

But I don't trust a single person to write her other than Ostrander/Yale. Like I don't trust them to do it right. Because like it's easy to write her being shady and manipulative and involved in secret government conspiracies. That's what she does. But it feels so hollow once you've seen her character in the way Ostrander describes it. Like she is a woman who is desperate and trying to do what she thinks is right. She has found a place of power (as a fat Black woman in the 1980s) and is doing anything she can to fight and hold onto it as powerful and ambitious men try and steal it from her. So she doubles down. She doubles down on the shady deals and the broken promises and the violence and she destroys her enemies, and loses a part of her soul in the process. And then some other ambitious politician rises up and the process repeats itself over and over and over again as each time she loses more of her morality and more of her soul and more of the respect her colleagues had for her. In place of that she gains more power, she gains fear, and an even more badass reputation. Until by the end of the book the villains begin to understand/sympathize with her more than the heroes ever will. Like THAT is who Amanda Waller is. It may happen subtly, it may happen over a longer period of time but that descent is a critical part of her character! She is a tragic character! And I feel like every perception of Suicide Squad I've seen outside of the original has her as this static villainous snapshot which is just untrue to her core imo. Like she is not a hero. But she is also not JUST a villain. She is a highly flawed character who is always descending farther and farther into villainy as she is led there by what she believes is right.

i said this YEARS ago when the 'vibes based literacy" discussion started because i had been reading about dyslexia to try to help my partner at the time, who was undiagnosed: the book about dyslexia that i was reading described precisely the techniques used in the "contextual guessing" reading education system, but as dysfunctional adaptations by dyslexic children. the contect guessing and memorization thing is a way of teaching entire generations of children to be functionally dyslexic, a profound and devastating disability, when they do not have dyslexia and do not need to have it. it's horrifying. it was how my partner read things, and watching him try to read something out loud was extremely demonstrative of the struggle he was having.

ken goodman probably had dyslexia and didn't know it, it's the most common learning disability in the world, an estimated 20% of all humans on earth have some degree of it.

In the paper, Goodman rejected the idea that reading is a precise process that involves exact or detailed perception of letters or words. Instead, he argued that as people read, they make predictions about the words on the page using these three cues: 1. graphic cues (what do the letters tell you about what the word might be?) 2. syntactic cues (what kind of word could it be, for example, a noun or a verb?) 3. semantic cues (what word would make sense here, based on the context?) he's completely wrong, this not how fully literate people read. this is how dyslexic people read. fully literate people are using phonics and the alphabet all the time, that's how we read so fast and so easily, even texts that we're unfamiliar with or that aren't in our native language. i can scan a page of italian, french or norwegian and get the gist of it even though i don't speak the languages. i can sound out those words and pronounce them, even if im pronouncing them incorrectly, just by reading the actual letters and phonemes.

relying on context to predict which word comes next is what leads to the kind of aphasia dyslexics often exhibit not only while reading, but when speaking aloud. my partner would swap words that were contextually correct but not what he actually meant all the time. for example if he wanted me to hand him a blue comb lying nearby on a table, he would say "could you please hand me the green brush?" or if he was describing a cat he saw, he would often swap in another contextually-related word, one that sounded the same, like "bat", or one that was conceptually related but incorrect, like "dog". as a result i had to ask him to clarify or repeat himself many times to figure out what he was trying to say. it created profound problems for him and separated him from me and everyone else. the worst part is that he was barely aware of this. when he was driving it was extremely difficult for him to follow or give directions because he would swap out "left" and 'right" randomly.
